GEOPOLITICS: TRADE WAR
- EVENT (APRIL 2): US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP TO ANNOUNCE RECIPROCAL TARIFFS. US President Trump confirmed that a sweeping tariff package will be unveiled on April 2, aimed at key import sectors including automobiles, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and possibly lumber. Trump reiterated that these measures seek to rebalance trade and punish unfair tariff and non-tariff barriers imposed on American goods. (Source: Bloomberg / Reuters)
- EARLIER: US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP WARNED OF POSSIBLE TARIFFS ON EU PRODUCTS. Donald Trump has warned Europe of possible tariffs to address the trade deficit but has not yet specified the extent, timing, or specific measures he intends to implement. These actions strengthen confidence in the U.S. dollar and could put additional pressure on the Euro.
EVENTS:
- FRIDAY, MARCH 28, AT 12:30 GMT: PERSONAL CONSUMPTION EXPENDITURES (PCE) PRICE INDEX (FEBRUARY): The U.S. is set to publish the PCE Price Index, the Fed’s preferred measure of inflation. Last month’s reading came in at 2.5%, down from 2.6% in January. If the data comes in above expectations, it could push the dollar by reducing the chances of rate cuts, putting pressure on EUR/USD.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 4, AT 12:30 GMT: US NONFARM PAYROLLS (NFP) AND UNEMPLOYMENT RATE (MARCH). The U.S. labor market report will be in focus. In February, NFPs came in at 275K and the unemployment rate rose to 4.1% from the previous 4.0%. If the data beats expectations, the U.S. dollar could strengthen, putting pressure on EUR/USD.
US FEDERAL RESERVE - INTEREST RATE CUTS:
- BREAKING (MARCH 19): US FEDERAL RESERVE HOLDS RATES STEADY AT 4.50%. The US Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate steady at 4.50%. However, Jerome Powell reaffirmed the Fed’s projection of two rate cuts in 2025.
- NEXT FED INTEREST RATE DECISION: May 7, 2025. Analysts expect no changes to the 4.5% interest rate in the USA.
