GEOPOLITICS: TARIFFS AND TRADE
- BREAKING (APRIL 9): US PRESIDENT TRUMP SUSPENDED RECIPROCAL TARIFFS ON THE REST OF THE WORLD FOR 90 DAYS. For the next 90 days, the US will charge countries that are part of the reciprocal tariff plan only 10%, compared to the range of up to 84% previously planned, as it gives time and space for other countries to begin and reach new trade deals with the USA. More than 70 countries have already contacted the US administration to begin talks soon. This has significantly reduced global recession fears.
EVENTS (UNITED STATES):
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, AT 13:30 GMT+1: US RETAIL SALES (MARCH): A lower-than-expected rating could be taken as negative for the USDCAD pair because it could motivate the Fed to lower interest rates more aggressively, putting downward pressure on the pair. This data measures the change in the total value of sales at the retail level. The data for the previous month stands at 3.1%, which was below than 4.2% the month before.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, AT 18:15 GMT+1: FED CHAIR JEROME POWELL SPEECH. Fed Chair Jerome Powell will deliver a speech on the U.S. economic outlook at the Economic Club of Chicago.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 17, AT 13:30 GMT+1: US INITIAL JOBLESS CLAIMS: A higher-than-expected rating could create negative pressures for the USDCAD pair because it could signal more interest rate cuts by the FED. This data measures the number of individuals who have filed for unemployment insurance for the first time during the past week. The previous data stood at 223K, which was higher than 219K the month before.
EVENTS (CANADA):
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, AT 14:45 GMT+1: BANK OF CANADA INTEREST RATE DECISION: A pause in the interest rate cut cycle is expected to create negative pressures for the USDCAD pair. The Bank of Canada is expected to keep its policy rate at 2.75%. The bank’s press conference will take place at 15:30 GMT+1, the same day.
